Signs in Union

The size and location of permanent and temporary signs is regulated by the City's Sign Regulations.  In compliance with this ordinance, all signs within the City of Union must be permitted.  Additionally, any temporary signage including banners and garage sale signs must receive a permit.

SIGN PERMITS:

Sign permits are needed for all types of signs. If you own a business and contract a sign company to affix a sign to your building or a pole, fill out the top part of the Sign Permit Application and submit two sets of plans. If there is electric involved, electrical plans need to be included. 

SPECIAL EVENT SIGNS:

If the signs are for a special event (church rummage sale, fish fry, blood drive, etc.) you are allowed to put out five (5) signs advertising your event. You do not need a permit to advertise on your own personal property. However any place else you want to place a sign you will need written permission from the landowner. Once you have the written permission, bring a completed application along with the permission slips and we will type you up a permit and give you stickers to place on your signs. PLEASE DO NOT PLACE THE SIGNS IN THE ROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY OR THEY WILL BE REMOVED. 

YARD SALE SIGNS:

If you are having a yard sale, you can put signs in your own yard without a permit. If you put signs ANYWHERE ELSE – you need a permit. You are allowed to put out five (5) off-premise yard sale signs. To put a yard sale sign up you will need the property owner’s written permission. Once you have written permission, bring a completed sign permit application along with the permission slips and we will type up a permit and give you stickers to place on your signs. The fee for yard sale signs is $3.00 for up to five (5) signs. PLEASE DO NOT PLACE SIGNS IN THE ROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY, ON LIGHT STANDARDS, STREET SIGNS, STOP SIGNS, UTILITY POLES OR PLACE BOXES IN INTERSECTIONS. THEY WILL BE REMOVED AND YOU MAY BE TICKETED BY THE CITY OF UNION POLICE DEPARTMENT.
